Have you ever seen a Potters Bar road name and wondered how on earth they came up with it?
Here are some names with a deeper meaning
- Byng Drive - The Byngs of Wrotham Park
- Carpenters Way - Lt. Col. W.L. Carpenter of Oakmere House (1835)
- Chase Road - Enfield Chase
- Cotton Road - named after Joseph or Thomas Cotton (?)
- Darkes Lane - Surrounding land once belonged to Darkes Farm
- Dugdale Hill Lane - Road leading to Dugdale Hill
- Elmfield Road - Former site of residential house 'Elmfield'
- Forbes Avenue - Mrs Forbes lived at Oakmere House
- Green Meadow - Former site of 'The Meadow House'
- Hudsons Court, Darkes Lane - Former site of Hudsons Garage
- Kimptons Mead - A field called 'Kimptons Mead' once existed here
- Oakmere Lane - Road once led to Oakmere Farm
- Osborne Road - Osborne Hall once located on Hawkshead Road
- Potters Court, Darkes Lane - Former site of the Potters Bar Public House
- Ritz Court, Byng Drive - Nr to site of the Ritz Cinema
- Rushfield - A field called 'Rushfield' once existed here
- Salisbury Close - Former site of Salisbury House
- Shillitoe Avenue - Councillor Horace Shillitoe
- St Johns Close - Former site of St Johns School
- Tempest Avenue - Where the Zeppelin crashed, shot down by Lt Tempest
- The Walk - The footpath or "The Walk" from the village to the train station
- Wain Close - Former site of 'The Wainhouse'
- Watkins Rise (Ladbrooke Site) - Rev Watkins who funded Ladbrooke School
- Wulstan Park - After Wulstan Tempest who shot down the Zeppelin
There are some other puzzles. Mutton Lane originally followed the course of Baker Street before being turned through ninety degrees. Who gave their name to Billy Lows Lane? Then there is Quakers Lane.
